About the Project
Kunbi is a cotton chequered saree in red and white with a sturdy weave good enough to be worn for farming.
Kunbi tribe is believed to be the oldest tribe of Goa. Kunbi handloom fabric is a cotton fabric draped like a saree below the knees by tribal women in the paddy fields. Over the years, much of the sari's original glory has been sliding down a steep descent, due to increasing use of artificial silk and synthetic fibers inundating the market.
Due to increasing power looms, much of the Kunbi weaving began being outsourced to its immediate neighbour, Maharashtra. Due to this, the number of native weavers practicing this art has reduced at a staggering rate.
The project was thus envisaged to revive the craft of Kunbi Artisans in Goa through provision of infrastructure and channel to sell their products; and also thus incentivizing the new generation to take up such craftsmanship so that the number of weavers/craftsman can be increased.
Objectives vis a vis Benefits :
To setup a permanent infrastructure and marketing facilities for the handicrafts artisans and handloom weavers. This will enable them to sell their products round the year to a wider target audience (or customer segment).
To create direct and indirect job opportunities for local population
To provide a platform for learning and sharing traditional and exclusive crafts, which finally helps crafts people and their communities.
To provide eco-tourism facilities for domestic as well as international tourists
